From the news release:

Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages can zoom in on our local landscape in a native tree and shrub photo contest. The “Forests In Focus” contest is sponsored by South St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District, with support from First Photo, WDSE-TV, Duluth News Tribune and the Duluth Budgeteer News.

The photo contest offers professional judging, prizes, and publicity for eight winning entrants, plus online publication for all. Contest judges include Michael Furtman, award winning professional nature photographer and writer; Mike Mennes, owner of First Photo; and R.C. Boheim, conservation district manager.

Each of eight winners will receive three packets of printed notecards featuring winning photos; a $35 gift certificate to the Conservation District’s 2013 tree and shrub sale; inclusion in a special segment on WDSE/PBS North Great Gardening; plus inclusion in a slideshow on the Duluth News Tribune's website. All entries which correctly identify a select species will be included, with credits, in a slideshow on the Conservation District’s website.

There are 35 species of native trees and shrubs to shoot for, everything from staghorn sumac to sandbar willow. Judges will pick one winner per species.

Contest guidelines and the list of target species are available online at www.southstlouisswcd.org/contest or via email: contest@southstlouisswcd.org.

Each submission must include two digital photos of the species -- one capturing the plant's overall character and a close-up of a telling detail—plus a brief note of why this photographed specimen deserves to be the model for its kind.
